Dating back to the last period of the tertiary era
Dating back to the last period of the tertiary era, passing through the advent of the Senoni Gauls, to the Roman colonies and crossing the Middle Ages, Scapezzano rises on a hill lying between the valleys of the Misa river and the Cesano river. This was the most important castle located in the territory of Senigallia and was part of a defensive system created by the populations to preserve and defend their agricultural activities already tried by the continuous battles.
Despite the venerable and remote existence, the name Scapezzano born as “Fundus Scapsianum” appears for the first time in a parchment of the tenth century AD, after the year one thousand, Scapezzano began to rise from the mists of the early Middle Ages. The most extensive properties of this territory belonged to the Monastery of Fonte Avellana, which is said to have hosted the great poet Dante Alighieri during his exile.
Starting from the lordship of the Malatesta first, to the last Lords of Della Rovere after, of which the testimonies are still preserved today, the town of Scapezzano has crossed the centuries and we can still admire its clothes; like an old dress yellowed by time, it preserves the charm of history.
Those who visit Scapezzano today, can stage the triumphal entrance to the castle and the walls, through its (now restored) main staircase, topped by the mighty clock tower, which leads directly to the main church of San Giovanni Battista. We can walk through the interior of the walls, accessing the ancient Towers where we can admire a breathtaking panorama and speaking of breathtaking, we cannot miss the walk on the viewpoint, a long balcony overlooking infinity.
The important clerical presence in the territory gave Scapezzano the existence of many churches, some of these, even if deconsecrated, can still be visited. Scapezzano over the centuries has suffered numerous building degradations due to which many of its treasures have been lost, but it nevertheless retains the charm of a peak close to the sea.
During The November Period, The Advent Of The New Oil Is Celebrated, There Are Many Taverns That Host The Delicacies Of The Territory, Thanks To The Numerous Olive Groves That Surround It. In August, The Historical Reinterpretation Of The Castle Is Celebrated With Songs, Dances And Parades In Period Costumes, The “Palio Dell’oca” And The Stoccafisso Dinner, A Typical Dish Of Our Lands.
Scapezzano is a small, indeed very small, town but like every country that this region offers, it contains millennia of stories.
